Chinese takeout does not accept coins of bronze?

A lot of Chinese takeaway get really offended if you offer a small change (ie, 1 or 2 pence coins), even if only a small amount, like 10 or 20 pence. Are there cultural reasons why the Chinese are offended offered in bronze coins?. I live in the UK.

They usually do not offer customers the change of bronze coins, so no way to get rid of them.
