What made / Meiji Edo Japanese wanted advert look like the bulletin board?

What I mean by my question is: Are the signs drawn in the ukiyo-e or made more realistic? Where they painted in the style of color or black and white? What was the message boards built bamboo slats, solid wood or other? If an image of what looked like these I have available, it would be helpful.
